Spinosaurus (SPINE-oh-SORE-us)
Name meaning: 'spine lizard'
Spinosaurus is a large theropod dinosaur whose name means "spine lizard," referring to the tall neural spines on its back that formed a sail-like structure. It lived approximately 100 to 94 million years ago during the Cenomanian stage of the Late Cretaceous period. Fossils have been found in North Africa, including regions now in Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. As a spinosaurid theropod, Spinosaurus was semi-aquatic, spending much of its time in or near water, unlike most land-based theropods. Its primary diet consisted of fish (piscivorous), supplemented by other aquatic prey and occasionally small to medium terrestrial animals. It inhabited humid environments such as tidal flats, mangrove forests, rivers, and lakes.
