Plesiosaurs were highly successful Mesozoic marine reptiles that ruled the oceans from the Late Triassic to the Late Cretaceous period. They are characterized by a rigid, barrel-shaped body propelled by four large, identical flippers, utilizing a unique form of underwater "flight" to navigate the seas. The group split into two distinct body plans: the long-necked *plesiosauromorphs* with small heads adapted for catching fish, and the short-necked *pliosauromorphs* with massive jaws designed for hunting larger prey. As air-breathing reptiles fully adapted to open-ocean life, they did not lay eggs on land, but instead gave live birth to single, large offspring.
