Size (Inch): 3.10"
Selenite is a chemically pure, crystalline variety of the hydrous calcium sulfate mineral gypsum (CaSO_4 \cdot 2H_2O), renowned for its exceptional optical clarity and tabular or columnar crystal habits. Belonging to the monoclinic crystal system, it is defined by its extreme softness—measuring just a 2 on the Mohs hardness scale—and its perfect cleavage, which allows it to easily split into thin, flexible, but inelastic sheets. While most common minerals possess a vitreous luster, true selenite exhibits a pearly or silky luster and can grow into massive, well-formed crystals, most famously seen in subterranean caves where hydrothermal fluids have allowed them to grow undisturbed for millennia.
