The Siege of Vicksburg
The Siege of Vicksburg (May 18–July 4, 1863) was a pivotal 47-day operation in the American Civil War. Union Major General Ulysses S. Grant encircled the strategically vital Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River bluffs, cutting off supplies after failed assaults. His forces subjected the roughly 30,000 defenders under Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton to relentless artillery bombardment, leading to severe starvation, disease, and hardship inside the city. On July 4, Pemberton surrendered the city and his army, giving the Union full control of the Mississippi River, splitting the Confederacy in two, and marking a major turning point alongside the Battle of Gettysburg. President Lincoln hailed it as the key to victory. Most of the battlefield is now preserved at the Vicksburg National Military Park.
