Listed here are unbroken Las Choyas "Coconut" geodes from the Chihuahuan Desert of Mexico. Inside each geode may be smokey quartz, quartz, or in rarer cases amethyst, along with other possible mineral inclusions. While generally near-completely spherical, they are natural and the shapes will vary (some can be flatter, more oval-like, etc). These geodes are around the 3.5 to 3.75" size range.
Las Choyas Geodes: What Are They?
Las Choyas geodes, often called "Coconut Geodes" for their rugged, rounded shells, are found in Mexico’s Chihuahuan Desert. Discovered in 1960, they are found in shafts that are 100 to 200 feet below the surface. They form in volcanic ash tuff from prehistoric eruptions, where gas bubbles created cavities that were filled over millions of years by mineral-rich groundwater. When opened, they have the possibility of containing clear quartz, smokey quartz, or in rare cases amethyst. Other minerals commonly found include chalcedony (agate) and calcite, along with secondary minerals like goethite, hematite, and mordenite
